Living in a nursing home doesn’t mean staying indoors all the time. At Oxford House, we believe that joy, connection, and exploration should be part of everyday life, regardless of age or mobility. With that in mind, we recently launched a new initiative: weekly trips to Windsor, taking place every Tuesday since the beginning of August. This simple idea has already sparked big smiles, lively conversations, and beautiful memories for everyone involved.
Our very first outing took place on 5th August, on a wonderfully sunny day, perfect for our residents’ first adventure. A small group of three residents, accompanied by staff members, set off in the morning for a relaxing day in one of the UK’s most iconic towns. We’re grateful to Slough Community Transport, who provided wheelchair-accessible transport, ensuring everyone could participate safely and comfortably.
The day began with a bit of window shopping, followed by a stroll along the Long Walk, where we enjoyed the fresh air and peaceful surroundings. We then visited Windsor Castle, taking in its stunning architecture and soaking up the area’s rich history. Afterwards, we wandered down to the River Thames, fed the ducks, and enjoyed a quiet moment by the water. To round off the day, we found the perfect spot for a classic British lunch: freshly cooked fish and chips.
The outing was filled with warmth, laughter, and light hearted conversation. These experiences, while seemingly simple, offer something truly meaningful: the chance to reconnect with the wider world, enjoy the outdoors, and create new memories. They remind us that joy can be found in the smallest of things, a walk in the sun, a shared meal, or a change of scenery.
While we are currently able to take three residents at a time, this is just the beginning. A new group will head out every Tuesday, and we’ll ensure that everyone who wants to join will have the opportunity.
