This important awareness day shines a light on one of the most urgent and yet often overlooked medical conditions: <strong>sepsis<\/strong>. In 2025, the theme is <strong>\u201c5 Facts \u00d7 5 Actions\u201d<\/strong>, highlighting five key truths about sepsis and five urgent steps that governments, healthcare providers, and communities must take to save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First established in <strong>2012<\/strong> by the <strong>Global Sepsis Alliance<\/strong>, World Sepsis Day is now marked across the globe. In the UK, it forms part of <strong>Sepsis Awareness Month in September<\/strong>. By spreading awareness, we can ensure that more people recognise the signs, seek help early, and ultimately save lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body\u2019s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. Without timely recognition and treatment, sepsis can lead to: <strong>septic shock<\/strong>, <strong>multi-organ failure<\/strong>, and <strong>death<\/strong>. Sepsis is the <strong>final common pathway to death from most infectious diseases worldwide<\/strong>, including viral infections such as <strong>COVID-19<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global Impact of Sepsis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1 in 5 deaths globally<\/strong> is caused by sepsis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every year, there are <strong>49 million cases<\/strong> and <strong>11 million deaths<\/strong> \u2013 more than those caused by cancer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sepsis affects people of all ages but is especially dangerous for newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sepsis can look like other conditions, which makes it harder to recognise. Early awareness is vital. Seek urgent medical help if infection is suspected and symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Slurred speech or confusion<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extreme shivering, fever, or feeling very cold<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passing no urine (in a day)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Severe breathlessness<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skin mottled, discoloured, or very pale<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A useful way to remember is the acronym <strong>SEPSIS<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>S<\/strong>lurred speech or confusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>E<\/strong>xtreme shivering or muscle pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>P<\/strong>assing no urine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>S<\/strong>evere breathlessness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>I<\/strong>t feels like you\u2019re going to die<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>S<\/strong>kin mottled or discoloured<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sepsis is a <strong>medical emergency<\/strong>. With prompt treatment, lives can be saved. Care may include: <strong>rapid antibiotics<\/strong> to fight infection, <strong>IV fluids<\/strong> to stabilise blood pressure, <strong>oxygen therapy<\/strong>, and s<strong>pecialist care in intensive care units (ICU)<\/strong> for severe cases.
